Biographical Text

W. Tolhurst, Werribee
After a search of all available records, there is no record that is a match for “W. Tolhurst”, with a connection to the Werribee district.

His name first appeared in the Roll of Honor, Werribee Shire Banner, 22 July 1915, p.3. The Roll of Honor also contains a post script “...Some of the above have failed to pass the medical test.”
This may possibly be the case for “Tolhurst, W., Werribee.”

His name was published weekly in the Werribee Shire Banner's Roll of Honor for the duration of the war, but there is no other mention of his name in their pages.

There was only one “W. Tolhurst” in the official records who enlisted in the Great War, and he was Wilfred Tolhurst, who enlisted in Perth W.A. on 5 July 1917.  This was two years later than the Tolhurst who was listed in the Werribee Shire Banner.

The National Archives of Australia has a brief record of a William Alfred Tolhurst who enlisted at Ballarat at some unspecified date. He was examined on 15 October 1917 at the Domain, Melbourne, and his application to enlist had been rejected because of medical reasons.  At that time, he was aged 48 and 11 months, and his occupation was an Architect.
